Louis Becke is one of our personal favorite all-time authors. His many stories of South Pacific life, customs, and adventure in the late 1800s are right up there with the best. As a "recruiter" on sailing vessels that supplied the work force for large plantations on other islands, Louis Becke became fluent in several of the Pacific Island tongues, including Hawaiian, and made many life-long friends. As a prospector in the Gold Fields of N. Australia, he also shows his delightful insight into the vagaries of human character and can weave in subtle love stories. His stories are full of action but also reflect a deep interest in and knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Pacific Islands and Australian northeast.
