Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish author who strongly influenced the development of horror stories. Written in 1863, 'The House By The Churchyard' is a gothic tale that is almost a bizarre cross between Jane Austen and Stephen King. The social interactions and comedies of a small town's gentry is offset by the sense of creeping, brooding menace that gathers by degrees from the opening scenes of a reburial of a coffin by night to the frankly creepy depiction of a house haunted by a malevolent spirit. Great stuff! Le Fanu also wrote the vampire tale 'Carmilla' which greatly influenced another Irishman, Bram Stoker, a few years later.
