This was tagged "werewolves". This IS NOT a werewolf story. There is only the vaguest hint of any sort of wolfy nature in this at all.
What it is, is a Gothic suspense/love story, in the style of the Victorian authors. This is such a deviation from Rohmer's usual works that I can definitely see why he didn't publish it under his already established name. -- It's obviously not his field, and you can feel him struggle throughout the book.
That being said, if you're a fan of the Gothic Suspense/Love stories, you *might* like it. It has beautiful imagery, and occasional bits of poignant wisdom that so often riddle Rohmer's other works.
For the die hard Rohmer fans, you'll probably read it anyway. For everyone else: it's predictable to a fault, and unless you're really looking for a "cookie cutter" rendition of almost every dark/creepy Victorian/romance novel centering around a family curse, I'd move on to something a bit better. I adore Rohmer, but this is CLEARLY not his best work, or even good work.
