Published in 1897, The Sundering Flood is the last romance by William Morris (1834–1896), completed shortly before his death and published posthumously. Set in a fantasy medieval world, the story follows Osberne, a young warrior living beside a great river — the Sundering Flood — who falls in love with Elfhild, a girl on the opposite bank. The river is too wide and violent to cross, and the lovers must endure years of separation, war, and adventure before they can be reunited. Morris, who was equally renowned as a designer, poet, and socialist activist, invented the modern fantasy novel with works like The Wood Beyond the World and The Well at the World's End; The Sundering Flood was his farewell to the form.
