Way to Go, Smashwords!
Smashwords just got a deal to supply the Kindle store at a better rate for indie authors. The number is most impressive, 44.5%, and reflects, I guess, Smashwords’ better vetting and production values. That % is better than the 35% you’d get for going it alone in dtp.amazon.com.
Personally, I still don’t see a ton of value in Smashwords, but, hey, 44.5% is better than 35%.
Disclaimer: as mentioned elsewhere, I’ve been negotiating over the 60% or so extant Olympia titles not currently in the Kindle store, wanting improved rates and a few other benefits, mentioning (repeatedly) the somewhat poor treatment of Mobipocket orphans, who were with Amazon the longest.
I really congratulate Smashwords and Mark Coker on this achievement, because there is now no goddamned I, personally, can get less, given prominence in certain categories.*
*14 of the top 100 right now. It’s even better at night, and doesn’t include much of my best porn.
