About This Book

The Abbot is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832), first published in 1820 as a sequel to The Monastery. Set in sixteenth-century Scotland, it follows the young page Roland Graeme as he becomes entangled in the intrigues surrounding Mary, Queen of Scots, during her imprisonment at Lochleven Castle. The novel culminates in Mary's dramatic escape and the Battle of Langside. Scott's vivid recreation of the religious conflicts and political violence of the Scottish Reformation made the novel popular in its day, though it is less read than his major works. The Abbot is in the public domain.
