About This Book
Alcatraz is a work of non-fiction by Thomas E. Gaddis (1908–1984) about the notorious federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The prison, which operated from 1934 to 1963, held some of America's most infamous criminals, including Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. Gaddis, who corresponded extensively with Stroud, is best known for his biography Birdman of Alcatraz (1955), which was adapted into the 1962 film starring Burt Lancaster.
