About This Book

Amadis is the libretto by Philippe Quinault (1635–1688) for the tragédie en musique composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully, first performed at the Paris Opera in January 1684. Based on the medieval romance Amadis de Gaula, the opera follows the knight Amadis and his beloved Oriane through trials of enchantment, treachery, and separation, with the sorceress Arcabonne and the enchanter Arcalaüs as their antagonists. Amadis is considered one of Quinault's masterpieces and a high point of French Baroque opera. The libretto is in the public domain.
