About This Book

Cadmus et Hermione is the libretto by Philippe Quinault (1635–1688) for the tragédie en musique composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully, first performed at the Paris Opera on 27 April 1673. It is historically significant as the first French opera in the tragédie en musique form — the genre that would dominate French lyric theater for over a century. Based on Ovid, the opera follows the mythological hero Cadmus as he battles a dragon and overcomes enchantments to win the hand of Hermione. The libretto is in the public domain.
