About This Book

Published in 1906, Chip, of the Flying U is the debut novel by B. M. Bower (Bertha Muzzy Sinclair, 1871–1940), the first woman to build a career writing popular Western fiction. The story introduces Chip Bennett, a talented cowboy and amateur artist working at the Flying U ranch in Montana, and the spirited young woman doctor who arrives from the East and upends his world. Part romance, part ranch comedy, the novel drew on Bower's firsthand experience of cattle country near Big Sandy, Montana, and became an immediate success, launching a series of Flying U novels that would span her entire career. Bower went on to write fifty-seven Western novels, selling over two million copies. Chip, of the Flying U is in the public domain.
