About This Book

Published in 1944, Crime on My Hands is a comic mystery novel credited to the suave British-born film star George Sanders (1906–1972), though it was ghostwritten by Craig Rice (1908–1957), one of the wittiest crime writers of the era. Sanders plays a fictionalized version of himself — a Hollywood actor weary of detective roles who travels to a desert location for a film shoot. When a dead extra turns up on set, very much not in the script, Sanders finds himself investigating a real murder with the same reluctant charm he brought to his screen roles as the Saint and the Falcon.

Rice, who had written scripts for two Falcon films, captured Sanders's trademark cocktail of sophistication and disdain. The book is dedicated to her. Crime on My Hands is a light, fast entertainment that trades on the novelty of a real movie star as amateur sleuth.
