About This Book

Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea is a work of Arctic exploration by Sir John Franklin (1786–1847), the British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led multiple expeditions to chart the Canadian Arctic coast. Franklin's accounts of his northern expeditions — recording extreme cold, starvation, and encounters with Indigenous peoples — were widely read in nineteenth-century Britain. His final expedition in 1845 to discover the Northwest Passage ended in the loss of both his ships and all 129 men, making it one of the great tragedies of polar exploration.
