About This Book

Persée is the libretto by Philippe Quinault (1635–1688) for the tragédie en musique composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully, first performed at the Paris Opera on 17 April 1682. Based on Ovid's account of the myth of Perseus and Andromeda, the opera follows the hero Perseus as he slays the Gorgon Medusa and rescues the princess Andromeda from a sea monster, defying the jealous goddess Juno and the scheming king Phinée. Persée was one of the most frequently revived operas of the ancien régime and is admired for the grandeur of its spectacle and the emotional depth of Quinault's verse. The libretto is in the public domain.
