About This Book

Published in 1876, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens, 1835–1910) set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, along the Mississippi River. Tom Sawyer, a clever, mischievous boy being raised by his Aunt Polly, spends his days playing hooky, treasure hunting, attending his own funeral, and falling in love with Becky Thatcher, while a darker subplot involves the villainous Injun Joe and a murder witnessed in a graveyard at midnight. Twain drew on his own boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri. The novel remains one of the most beloved works of American literature and introduced characters — including Tom's companion Huckleberry Finn — who would appear in Twain's subsequent masterpiece. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is in the public domain.
