About This Book
The Deluge (Polish: Potop) is the second volume of Henryk Sienkiewicz's monumental historical trilogy, set during the Swedish invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1655-1660. At its center is Andrzej Kmicic, a young Lithuanian noble whose impulsive violence threatens his engagement and leads him into treacherous alliance with Prince Radziwill. Kmicic's journey from hotheaded renegade to redeemed patriot forms the dramatic backbone, while the broader canvas depicts the near-total collapse and miraculous recovery of the Commonwealth. Compared to Tolstoy's War and Peace in scope, the novel helped earn Sienkiewicz the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 and remains one of the most widely read novels in Polish literary history.
