Published in 1913, The Gringos is a Western novel by B. M. Bower (1871–1940) set in early California during the transition from Mexican to American rule. The clash between the old ranchero culture and the incoming wave of Anglo settlers provides the backdrop for a story of loyalty, land disputes, and the collision of two ways of life. Bower, who wrote fifty-seven Western novels under her pen name, was known for her vivid settings and her sympathy for characters caught between changing worlds. The Gringos is in the public domain.
