The story follows Charming Billy Boyle, a solitary Montana cattle rancher haunted by the memory of a past love, who must navigate the hardships of frontier life while confronting his own loneliness and longing. When a woman from the East arrives in his world, Billy faces the question of whether the open range can accommodate the kind of happiness he thought he had lost. The Long Shadow is one of Bower's early standalone novels, written with the same insider knowledge of ranch life that made her Flying U series famous. Bower was the first woman to build a career writing popular Western fiction. The novel is in the public domain.
