It follows a young man from the East who is drawn to the Montana frontier, where the realities of ranch life — hard work, harsh weather, and the codes of the open range — strip away his romantic illusions and forge him into something tougher. Bower, who lived on ranches in Montana, brought an insider's knowledge to her depictions of cowboy culture.
