About This Book
Published in 1794, The Mysteries of Udolpho is the most famous novel by Ann Radcliffe (1764–1823) and the defining work of the Gothic romance. The orphaned Emily St. Aubert is carried off to the remote castle of Udolpho in the Apennines by her sinister guardian Montoni, where she endures psychological terror, mysterious disappearances, and apparently supernatural events — all eventually given rational explanations. Radcliffe's atmospheric descriptions of mountain landscapes and her mastery of suspense made the novel a sensation; it was the bestselling novel of the 1790s and was famously parodied by Jane Austen in Northanger Abbey. The Mysteries of Udolpho is in the public domain.
