About This Book

First serialized in Adventure magazine in 1922 as The Gray Mahatma, Caves of Terror is an occult adventure novel by Talbot Mundy (1879–1940) set in British India. British agent Athelstan King and American adventurer Greg Ramsden are drawn into a conspiracy by Hindu nationalists plotting to overthrow British rule. Their investigation leads them into underground temple caves populated by underfed crocodiles, panthers, and holy men conducting experiments in telepathy and clairvoyance, while the enigmatic princess Yasmini plays her own dangerous game.

Adventure magazine readers voted it their favorite novel of the year despite its departure from the magazine's typical fare. Mundy, who spent years in India and was deeply influenced by Theosophy, brought genuine sympathy for Indian culture to a story that might otherwise have been simple imperial adventure. Caves of Terror is in the public domain and freely available through Project Gutenberg.
