About This Book

Published in 1907, Prairie Flowers is the first volume of poetry by Margaret Bell Houston (1877–1966), the granddaughter of Sam Houston, president of the Republic of Texas and governor of the state. The collection contains verses composed during her youth in Texas, drawing on the landscapes, light, and rhythms of the Gulf Coast prairie.

Houston went on to publish The Singing Heart (1926), which won the annual book contest of the Poetry Society of Texas, and Dusk (1930). She was also active in the women's suffrage movement. Prairie Flowers was published by Richard G. Badger in Boston and is in the public domain.
